Hear No Evil

Tell us about a conversation you couldn’t help but overhear and wish you hadn’t.

A few weeks ago, I went down to Walgreens with my mom to pick up some photos and there was this group of teenage girls sitting at the photo machine, either trying to upload photos or do something else, I’m not really sure, but there were four of them and they were gathered around talking trash about their high school and the people they go to school with. They were talking about how crappy their school was and that they wish they didn’t go there. They were also slut shamming and using derogatory words and just thought that they were being funny. Then this one guy that they knew (and I suppose were friends with) who went to their school, walked up to them and they immediately started making fun of him. They said it in a joking manner but I could tell that this guy didn’t appreciate it. When he walked away, one of the girls shouted after him and called him the derogatory “f” word used against people who are homosexual. The kid turned toward the girl and was about the say something to her  (he was clearly offended), but she cut him off and immediately said that she was kidding. The guy obviously didn’t appreciate her jokes or her accept her apology. He just walked away and left the store. Then the girls started talking and joking with each other again, as if nothing had even happened or that they had done anything wrong.

When I heard this conversation, I really wanted to say something to them. I did not appreciate them using derogatory words against all kinds of different groups and acting as if they were superior to everyone that went to high school with them. I didn’t say anything, I just minded my own business and even though I don’t know what I would have said to them, I still wish I had done it.
