Ready, Set, Done

Our free-write is back by popular demand: today, write about anything — but you must write for exactly ten minutes, no more, no less.

So this poem was inspired by the song “Goodbye” from the musical Catch Me If You Can.  But beware: It’s rough.

There’s a song in my head

It’s about goodbye’s

About leaving behind an unwanted life

Starting again and making it real

Watching out for what comes next

And not looking back at once was

I keep thinking that this song is right

But maybe it’s also wrong

It’s about the stage and a made up life

How they’re never truly the same

Do we only pretend when we’re being inspired?

Does this bring out worst?

Or does the spot light bring us back

To the life we thought we had?

Maybe it really is all made up

And maybe it’s all for real

But I just don’t know how to choose

Between these lives I have

On stage you can be anyone else

Someone you’d never be

And yet you play the part so well

Maybe that’s who you truly can be

Is the make believe

Really all that bad?

Or is it something grand?

Something that’s inside your head

And waiting to be set free

Pretending to be someone else

Doesn’t mean you will lose touch

With who you are

And who you can be

It’s just something you’ve done

You’re forcing yourself to be a new

And to put on a brand new face

But what if this face is truly you

It’s just finally given space

What if we didn’t have to choose

Or have to say goodbye?

What if we can be

All we can be

And maybe we’ll turn out fine?

I don’t know what the future holds

Or if it’s already here

All I know is that this place

Has become something close and dear

The spotlights change

And the people will leave

But someone new will return

To see you in your newfound space

And clasp a shaking hand

It’s never too late to be who you are

Or be who you want to be

It’s just that the stage

Can be a great place

To be all that you can be

Aaron Tveit singing “Goodbye” from Catch Me If You Can

It’s my happy ending, now it’s time to say goodnight

We can stop pretending, tell the spotlight man turn off my life

Cause the show is done now, and it’s time to leave the stage.

The good guy won now and the band has no more songs to paly

It’s a happy ending so I’ll say

Goodbye, goodbye to all the make believe

Goodbye there’s no more magic up my sleeve

There’s nothing left to act up here, I’ll take my bow and disappear

No questions left for answering

There’s only one word left to sing, goodbye

It’s a happy ending, to the greatest show on earth

Now the curtains descending and I hope you got your moneys worth

Gonna stop the show now cause I wanna leave on top

So get up and go now. Cause there’s nothing left inside my head

Everything that’s left to say’s been said

Goodbye, goodbye to all the song and dance

Goodbye offstage I stand a better chance

The show is through, the parts been played

No standing in the wings afraid. No violins or phony tears

The word that’s music to my ears is goodbye

Well goodbye, goodbye, goodbye!

I’m not afraid of stopping, this end could be my start

I wanna live a life and not just play a part

I’ll walk into the sunset, I’ll sail across the sea

The final word, the last you’ll hear of me, or me…

Is goodbye, goodbye to every night alone

Goodbye, goodbye to lives I don’t own. I’m tired of living on the stage

A life that’s only on the page

Empty lies are in the past, I’ve tried before but here’s the last goodbye

Now goodbye, goodbye, Goodbye!

  1. This was really cool, Katie. I will have try this free writing experiment for myself! Sometimes the best way to get over writer’s block is to force yourself to write and see what comes out. 🙂
