A Bird, a Plane, and You!

You get to choose one superpower. Pick one of these, and explain your choice:

  • the ability to speak and understand any language
  • the ability to travel through time
  • the ability to make any two people agree with each other

This, here, is a pretty tough choice to make. I’m not really sure which one I would pick, so I’m going to just go down the line and see if I end up ruling any of these out.

First off, it would be incredibly amazing to be able to speak and understand any language. Then there would, in fact, be no language barrier, no matter where you went. I could go anywhere and be able to communicate with every single person I met. As a writer, I find communication to be incredibly important. You want people to understand and be able to relate to what you are writing about. You want people to find themselves in your work or be able to work out their issues, by being able to communicate their feelings through those words. Welp, I think I just picked my super power.

I would love to be able to go to as many countries as possible. But honestly, the thing that holds me back the most is the languages. I took Spanish in high school and took Italian in college and frankly, I know neither of those languages. I wouldn’t be able to talk to anyone, in any version of Spanish, or Italian, if I went to any country that spoke these languages. I’m going on a trip in a few months and I chose to go to places where they speak English. Albeit, they have accents, but those accents are being spoken with English words. If I could have the super power to speak and understand any language there would be nothing holding me back.

I absolutely love the idea of being able to speak to anyone in any language. The world would be such a friendly place if we all had this ability.

  1. The first one is almost there with an iPhone, which features speech recognition and automated translation. You can try it next time you travel. It’s quite neat.

The second one is really good, because you get to change your past and see your future. It is the only way to live your life fully. By seeing the future while changing what you do now, you will still have the future that reflects your new changes. The element of intrigue is still there to keep life interesting, except that you can dream higher.

The third one doesn’t mention if physical or virtual presence is required to make two people agree. I suppose so, because we have to be able to hear them to decide if we want to exercise the superpower. It’s sort of limited. Sometimes, decisions are made against you or your loved ones without your participation. Unless you can go back in time, let’s just stick to the second one.

Analysis complete. I need more difficult choices. 😉

  2. The first and the third would both be great if you loved to travel and wanted to be some kind of diplomat promoting world peace and stuff, with the third being more powerful I think. Any time an international crisis erupts, they call you to North Korea or wherever and *poof* problem solved. John Kerry and Lil’ Kim are having tea together. You could be like Superman/woman except less violent and you would probably wear some really slick Italian suit, I’m thinking dark colors, something conservative. Pretty sweet gig, I bet they really wine and dine you, and you get to stay at cool hotels where George Clooney or Kanye West or someone like that stayed.

Time travel though, would be the most amazing superpower of all, and you don’t have to wear any silly costume either. For instance, I would time travel back a couple years and learn what a “pingback” was. Then I would fast forward to right this second and I would know how to do one!
For sure I would go back like twenty-five years or so and buy tons of Apple and Microsoft, cha ching! Then I would be writing this from the state room of my yacht in the Caribbean. You could do all kinds of things with those powers. I would basically keep going back to times in my life when I screwed something up (how many is that I wonder) and then I would know exactly the right thing to say or the precise course of action to take. This would take a while. After that who knows? Go forward in time so that you could know how to prepare now, or go back and catch a Beatles show at the Cavern club, hang out with Jesus, the possibilities are endless!

    1. Wow, you’ve really thought these super powers out! I have to say that what you would do with your powers seems very exciting! Your time traveling life would be so glamorous. I would, however, love to travel back in time only if I had a blue box, an awesome suit, and a fez. If there’s no fez, then I draw the line.
